Writers Unblocked presents:
The remarkable story of Howard Luck Gossage
On 14th January Steve Harrison, author of ‘Changing the World is Only Fit Work for a Grown Man’, will be interviewed by Rory Sutherland on his own career as an adman and his recently published book about Howard Gossage.
Howard Gossage is the most innovative, influential and irreverent advertising genius to come out of 1960s America. You may not have heard of him but we are all his protégées. Everything we think of as new and innovative was done by him 50 years ago including interactive, PR-generating stunts, social media and behavioural economics. He was also aware that advertising needed a higher social purpose than just selling things. Gossage demonstrated this by using his work to kick-start the Green Movement, launch Friends of the Earth and free a Caribbean Island.
Rory Sutherland, Ogilvy & Mather UK states that “Gossage is the Velvet Underground to Ogilvy’s Beatles and Bernbach’s Rolling Stones. Never a household name but, to the cognoscenti, a lot more inspirational and influential.”
And according to Jeff Goodby, co-founder of Goodby Silverstein & Partners, “The best of Gossage is the best advertising ever done, and what’s really amazing is that the work he did foretold what’s happening on the internet and social media right now.”
Join us for the next in the Writers Unblocked series on Monday 14th January when Steve Harrison, an ex adman himself, will be interviewed by another legendary adman, Rory Sutherland on lessons we can learn from Gossage; his own personal experiences and observations of the industry; and will take probing questions from the floor.
The event will take place at the IPA, 44 Belgrave Square, London, SW1X 8QS. The evening will kick off at 6.00pm with a drinks reception. At 6.30pm Steve Harrison will be interviewed by Rory Sutherland followed by a Q&A. The event will close at 8.00pm.
Tickets costs £25 + VAT for IPA members and £50 + VAT for non-members.
Please note, bookings requesting to be paid by invoice will incur a 10% administration fee, and tickets will not be refunded 48 hours before the event, unless a waiting list is in operation.
Steve Harrison achieved his PhD with his thesis: American Society, Cinema and Television, 1950-1960. He then became a trainee copywriter at 30. Thereafter he was European Creative Director (OgilvyOne) and Global Creative Director (Wunderman) either side of starting his own agency, HTW. Until he retired from agency life in 2007, he won more Cannes Lions in his discipline than any creative director in the world. In 2009 he explained all in his book, How to do better creative work, which currently trades on amazon at over £1,700 a copy. In March of this year he brought outChanging the world is the only fit work of a grown man to wide critical acclaim in the UK, US and beyond.
